An Evening Prayer

This was my garden last year--2 tomato plants and 2 squash. It did okay. But this year, I'm determined to do better. This past week we have quadrupled the size of the garden and we dug out all the yucky, clay soil and we brought in richer dirt. And by "we" I mean WD. I make a much better supervisor. Well, not really. I just don't like to dig. But now for the hard part. What should we plant? Again, I'm using the term "we" loosely here. I know I want more tomatoes and more squash and even though basil is so cheap at our famer's market, I'd still like to try my hand at growing herbs, but what else? What's in your garden this year?

Hey, it's the return of Poetry Friday with one of my favorites, Louise Gluck and her poem, Vespers.

  1. Love the garden idea! My hubby told me just he other day he things we need to try our hand at some veggie growing. Lettuce is simple to grow, I'd vote YES for herbs too. Do you like beans? My parents always grew them. What about pepper plants?

Good luck and take pictures along the way.........please.

  2. This is the first year we're going to have a garden and we're going all out. Sugar Snap Peas, Watermelons, cucumbers, herbs, potatoes, strawberries, and maybe some carrots or something. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

  5. Cucumbers, green peppers and zucchini are favorites here. Oh and jalepenos...my husband does the gardening here and since we moved 2 years ago he hasn't started a garden here. I don't like to get my hands dirty. :) But I miss that fresh from the garden salsa. He promised he'd do it this year but I doubt he will cuz he's always so busy (golf, baseball season ugh!).

ps - he also plants radishes b/c they grow so fast it's a quick payoff for the kids to pluck them out of the ground (btw, I hate radishes!)

Good luck with your garden! May the rabbits stay away!

  6. I'm not very good at gardening, last year was the first that I had flowers live. A dear friend of mine has a green thumb and she's offered to come over and help me out this summer. I'll be blogging about it!

  7. We are planning on planting, tomatoes, jalapenos, Serrano's, broccoli, spinach, green beans, and maybe some bell peppers.

We tried the broccoli, jalapenos and Serrano's last year and they all turned out great.

  8. Nothing in my garden yet...too cold (I don't like cold or dirt so it has to wait until warm then I can kinda stand the dirt...). But I love pumpkins. I planted a few types last year...loved my ornamentals as I usually buy some at the store in the fall! :) Also tomatoes and lettuces (3 types - so easy!) and a few cornflowers thrown in for pretty! :)

  9. How about watermelon? They can be really fun if you water them enough. And if you get rosemary started out strong, it will last through your winters and thrive!

  10. I would love to have a garden, flowers or veggies, either one. Sadly, I was not born with a green thumb and everything I have ever planted has died. =(

  11. I have no idea. I don't have a garden and am afraid that if I plant one the deer will eat it. Yes, the deer get hungry and just walk up into the yard. Can you imagine if I had veggies?

  12. Very very nice! We've been married 20 yrs and never had a garden. But this year, we are! Yea! Not sure how to even prepare for it, but I've got to break ground soon I assume. Do you plant seeds to start yours or like little baby plants? Curious.

  16. We are going to build two raised beds this year as I seem to grow a lot of weeds! I plant tomatoes, peppers, cukes, squash, green bean, peas and onions. I have attempted spuds three times and they don't grow well for me (sad face)

  17. I am jealous that you have weather warm enough to plant a garden. It is snowing here and isn't supposed to stop all week!
