So Long, My Friend. My Yummy, Delicious Friend.

It shouldn't be too much longer until blackberry season is here! We have wild blackberries growing all around us but the best pickin' is done right across the road from our house where they're much easier to get to. Ever since those little white blooms popped up a couple of months ago, I have been craving blackberries--blackberry cake, blackberry cobbler, and maybe I'll even try making my own blackberry wine. And I can't forget my favorite, Blackberry Brulee.

But then something happened...

These guys showed up yesterday from the electric company and doused the roadside with chemicals. I'm guessing that they did this to prevent any saplings from growing up and interfering with the lines but my poor innocent blackberry bushes were caught up in the assault. And while I'm very thankful that the electric company restored my power Saturday morning (after Friday's storm) I do believe they owe me some blackberries!

  3. Oh no! Maybe they will grow back next year, just be sure to wash them REALLY GOOD to get all those chemicals off of them.

  4. Oh that rots! My parents had all kids of wild berry plants in their yard, I truly miss those, my mom could make a cobbler that would be sooooo good!
I look forward to some summer recipes from you.

  6. OH no! I am so sorry. I like blackberries but when I was growing up we had a mulberry tree that I loved to climb. I still have a scar on my shoulder from one of my climbs. That tree was cut down years ago but I still long for mulberries.

  9. Ooooo, my little one would be SO upset. She loves anything she can just go outside, pick off a bush or vine, and just eat.

  13. Two years back the electric company cut down a beautiful tree in my backyard. It wasn't even near a line, but they said they were told to clear the property behind me, I WAS MAD AS HELL!

  14. Ali, you seem to be taking that really well. I would've been screaming and running over there, NOT MY BERRIES!
I've had many things happen to plants and trees that I will not elaborate on, but oh the pain...I love my plants!
Hope you're enjoying summer...we just put up our little pool today. Hopefully I'll be able to get in soon!

  15. Ooooo... I would be so pissed! Seriously, I would complain. Sigh... but I work for an organic farm, so this kind of stuff gets my goat... like, a lot.

Hope you are having a good berry season otherwise!
