Recently, I finished reading the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. Overall, I liked it. But check out my review here to read what I didn't like about it. It inspired me to start shopping at the local farmer's market. Last Saturday morning, I picked up some peaches, pepper jelly, squash, basil and peas. It was like giving Walmart the finger. And that felt really good.

Looks like a book I will pass on reading. I will take what I'm personally. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean! And now I have a craving for pepper jelly!
ReplyDeleteJust read your book review! Yes she did make some annoying statements didn't she! But, I try to get a lot of my fruits and vegetables around the corner in the local Fruit shed!
ReplyDeleteSo healthy, too!
ReplyDeleteGreat review Ali. I love that you read it and took her information to heart. A lot of people I know just poo-pooed the idea and wouldn't even give it a try! I don't think you have to have your own garden - just shop at local markets and be aware how far your food travels!
ReplyDeleteShe is my favorite author despite her elitism (?). She is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs - granted, she does have more resources than the average American to seek out alternatives!
Try the book "In Defense of Food" also. Similar ideas and a lot of good data and info.
And, yes, buying bananas is really bad (especially non-organic - villages become uninhabitable due to the pesticides they use on the banana crop and all the villagers are forced to migrate). I think her point was more that 100% of bananas are imported and the transportation contributes a lot to global warming. But I still buy bananas - it is one of the few fruits my oldest son will eat!
I will have to check out the book, I am not reading anything at the moment so I migth just go and pick it up. I know what you mean about farmer's markets, I love going and getting my fruits and veggies from them. I am so sick and tired of our Walmart here I actually tore into one of the managers yesterday and I am about to write a complaint to the headquarters. Not that it will do any good but it will make me feel better.
ReplyDeletethis looks so nice and healthy, inspires me to begin my diet today!
ReplyDeleteLooks good! And I love the farmers market.
ReplyDeletewe finally got a farmers market and it is open until Oct. Whoo Hoo!
ReplyDeleteYeah Walmart, kiss it! I LOVE pumpkin butter. Mmmmm, I have to get a whole case of it to get me through the winter! I was so addicted when I was preggo, I thought I'd give birth to a pumpkin!
